Top-20 ranked Mside begins spring break travels in Sooner State

National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' No. 20-ranked Morningside College is part of an elite field at Langston University's Red Dirt Classic Friday and Saturday, March 5 and 6.

Head coach Jessica Jones-Sitzmann's squad, sporting a 12-0 record, will take on Central Methodist University, Texas A&M University-San Antonio, Baker University, Oklahoma City University, and the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma during the two-day tournament. The USA Softball Hall of Fame fields is the venue. Baker received votes on the preseason coaches listing, while OCU (No. 4) and USAO (No. 2) were in the first five.

  • Jones-Sitzmann's team continues to have one of the nation's most prolific offenses to date. The Mustangs rank among the best 10 in seven statistical categories that relate to the plate. They're second in doubles (34), runs scored (100), and RBI (92); fourth in doubles per game (2.833); seventh in hits (124); and ninth in home runs per outing (1.333) and slugging percentage (.638). Junior outfielder Ellie Cropley (JR/Sioux City, IA) (Sioux City, Iowa), junior infielder Morgan Nixon (JR/Omaha, NE) (Omaha, Neb.), and senior infielder Lexie Stolen (SR/Sioux City, IA) (Sioux City, Iowa) are some key individuals towards those sparkling rankings. Cropley's 11 doubles lead the nation; Nixon's six home runs are second-most, and her 42 total bases stand fifth; and Stolen's four home runs rank fifth, too.
  • Mside's pitching staff boasts some gaudy totals as well. The 0.77 combined earned run average is the eighth-lowest nationally. The entire trio of junior Katherine Wurtz (JR/Omaha, NE) (Omaha, Neb.), senior Alex Nelson (SR/Sioux Falls, SD) (Sioux Falls, S.D.), and sophomore Lisa Bolton (SO/American Canyon, CA) (American Canyon, Calif.) are part of the top 15 in wins with four apiece.
  • Morningside continues its 2021 spring break trip by playing six games in three days, March 8-10, against Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference members Bethany College, Kansas Wesleyan University, and Friends University.
