Mustangs fall to Northwestern

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Morningside's week started with an always highly anticipated matchup with Northwestern. This week's iteration came with the added weight of position in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings, as the two teams each had four league wins and were receiving votes in today's National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Coaches' Poll. While the Mustangs held the advantage for the majority of the contest, it was Northwestern that came out on top, 69-67.

Sloppy play down the stretch didn't help Morningside's case for the win, as missed shots and a series of turnovers collided with a Northwestern team that hit a pair of opportunistic three-pointers to gain the lead in the final few minutes of the contest.

Alexis Spier led Morningside offensively, scoring 19 on the day. Lily Vollertsen followed with 17 points, and Sam Ehlers came off the bench for 10. Spier, Vollertsen, Jordyn Carr, and Chaise Pfanstiel each had a trio of assists in the contest.

On the boards, Jordyn Carr was the team leader, with four rebounds. Ella Wragge, Jaeden Webb, Dani Peterson, Spier, Vollertsen, and Ehlers all followed with three each, while Pfanstiel had two and Megan Callahan and Baylie Girres each had one.

The Mustangs will look to bounce back against Mount Marty on Saturday, tipping off at 2 p.m. in the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center.
