SIOUX CITY, IOWA – An all-out team effort gave the Mustangs their first Great Plains Athletic Conference win of the 2024-25 women's basketball season, toppling a Doane team that was 3-0 and 1-0 in conference play entering the contest, by a score of 74-49.
Morningside's largest lead in the contest was 25, taking a lead at about the five minute mark of the first quarter and holding it for the final 35 minutes of the game.
Lily Vollertsen led all players in scoring with 21 points. Alexis Spier, who surpassed 1,000 career points with a three-pointer just before halftime, followed with 19. Sam Ehlers and Clancy Brown co-led Morningside's reserve players with six points apiece.
Spier gathered 10 rebounds to lead Morningside. Vollertsen had six, and Ehlers and Ella Wragge each had five. Jordyn Carr recorded team-highs in steals, with five, and assists, with four, to add to the Mustangs' ball-handling totals. Chaise Pfanstiel recorded Morningside's lone blocked shot.
Morningside heads to Waldorf on Tuesday of next week, hoping to pick up a conference road win over the Warriors at 6 p.m.
