SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Morningside University softball team scored 12 runs during Saturday's Senior Day doubleheader against Hastings at Jensen Softball Complex.
The Mustangs (18-11, 6-3 GPAC) needed five innings to knock off the Broncos, 9-0, before Hastings spoiled Senior Day with a late rally en route to a 5-3 win. The Mustangs celebrated five seniors: Maggie Fisher, Maria Ras, Ellie Gengler, Emme Dietrich, and Sami York.
Morningside's big inning of the day came in Game 1 when it scored seven times during the fourth inning. During that high-scoring frame, the Mustangs collected seven hits that helped them score many times.
Mackenzi Harrel had the big hit in the fourth inning with a three-run home run that gave the Mustangs run Nos. 7, 8 and 9. Emma Barwick, Addyson Maxell, and Paige Schuster also had run-producing hits during the inning.
Barwick had an RBI double, while Maxell turned in an RBI single during the second inning.
Adeline Fliege earned the win with a four-inning outing. She allowed two hits while striking out two and walking two. Maggie Fisher came in relief during the fifth inning, and retired all three batters she faced.
In Game 2, Morningside scored once in the first and twice during the fourth. During the first inning, Schuster stole home on a double-steal attempt. Harrel then drove in two runs in the fourth inning with a single down the left field line.
Morgan Secora pitched all seven innings, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits.
