Mustangs split with Jimmies, take No. 5 in GPAC Tournament

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – After splitting a Saturday doubleheader with Jamestown in an overcast Sioux City, the Mustangs finished in a four-team tie for third place in the GPAC heading into the GPAC Tournament next week.

The Jimmies took game one 3-1, but the Mustangs responded with a 10-6 win in game two. 

Jamestown scored two in the first inning and never lost the lead in game one. Paige Schuster singled home a run in the third to make it 2-1. The Jimmies added an insurance run in the fifth.

Kennedy Wineland tallied two hits and scored a run in the loss. Four other Mustangs tallied base hits. Bralen Biddlecome pitched the complete game, striking out two batters in the loss. 

The Jimmies took a 3-0 lead after two innings of game two, but the Mustangs responded and ran away with the win. Wineland doubled home two runs to get the Mustang offense going in the third. Kennedee Jones singled home Wineland to make it 3-3 after three.

After the Jimmies retook the lead 4-3 in the top of the fourth, Emma Barwick hit a home run off the top of the fence in straight away centerfield to re-tie the game 4-4 in the bottom half of the inning. Jones singled home two more and Mackenzi Harrel doubled home Jones to make it 7-4.

The Jimmies scratched one back in the fifth, but the Mustangs hit two home runs, a Jones two-run bomb to right and a Morgan Secora solo blast to left-center to make it 10-5 after six innings. 

All nine batters recorded base hits as Morningside totaled 15 hits, including five doubles and three home runs. Jones tallied three hits, including a home run, and five RBI for the Mustangs. Harrel also totaled three hits. Secora and Lainie Keller picked up two hits each. Mackenna Sidzyik, Wineland, Schuster, Harrel, and Keller doubled in the win. Wineland had two RBI. In the circle, Secora pitched the complete game with six strikeouts to earn the win.

The Mustangs finish the regular season with a 13-9 record in the GPAC. Jamestown, Dordt, and Concordia also finished at 13-9. All four teams will make the playoffs, and will have to match up against each other in the first round. The Defenders and Jimmies will play in a 3 vs. 6 matchup, while the Mustangs and Bulldogs will square off in the 4 vs. 5 matchup of the GPAC Tournament. Morningside and Concordia will play at Northwestern with a start time to be announced.
