Morningside lights up the scoreboard in doubleheader sweep of Flames

OMAHA, Neb. – Coming off their first conference loss of the season, the Mustangs made the trek south to face College of Saint Mary Wednesday, and returned home with a sweep of the Flames.

Morningside picked up a 7-3 win in game one and an 8-0 win in five innings in game two.

Paige Schuster singled home a runner to get a five run first inning started. Kennedee Jones followed that up with a single to score the game's second run. Ellie Gengler singled in a pair and Lainie Keller singled in Gengler to make it 5-0 after one. Morgan Secora helped herself out in the third as the pitcher drove a ball over the left field wall for a two-run home run to make it 7-0.

The Flames drove in three to cut the Morningside lead to four, but couldn't scratch any closer. Secora pitched the complete game, earning her seventh win of the season and struck out four batters in the process.

Mackenna Sidzyik, Kennedy Wineland, Schuster, Jones, Gengler and Keller tallied two hits apiece, but Secora's homer was the lone extra base hit in the win.

For the first three innings of game two, Morningside scored the same number of runs as the inning they were in, tallying one in the first, two in the second, and three in the third to build a 6-0 lead after three. 

Mackenzi Harrel started the scoring in the first with a double to bring in Schuster. Wineland singled home a pair in the second to make it 3-0. The Mustangs' lead doubled in the third as Secora laced a double to score one and Jenna Skradski singled in two more to give Morningside a 6-0 lead. Gengler reached on an error that brought in a run in the fifth and Sidzyik doubled in Gengler to get the lead to eight. 

Bralen Biddlecome pitched a five-inning complete game shutout. She struck out one and allowed one hit in the win. At the plate, Secora picked up three hits. Wineland, Jones, and Josie Hernandez totaled two hits each. Wineland and Skradski drove in two each. Morningside had five doubles in game two, and Secora had two of them.

The Mustangs are back in action Saturday at Dakota Wesleyan. Game one is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. in Mitchell.
