Softball splits Saturday double in Crete

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Hitting the road for a conference doubleheader against Doane Saturday, Morningside softball earned a split with the Tigers, taking game one 3-2 and losing game two 8-4.

It took extra innings to decide game one, as a Kennedee Jones solo home run in the ninth inning gave Morningside a 3-2 win. The Mustangs opened up a 4-1 lead in the second game of the day, but it was all Doane from there to seal a win for the Tigers.

Morningside scored the first two runs of game one, both unearned. Lainie Keller reached on an error that allowed Bralen Biddlecome to score. Mackenzi Harrel stole third in the following inning and advanced home on an errant throw by the catcher.

Doane scored one in the fourth and one in the sixth to tie the game at two. Jones' home run in the ninth was the winner as Morgan Secora pitched her ninth inning, turning the Tigers away to finish the game. Secora pitched nine innings, allowing two runs but striking out two in the win.

Jones had two hits for the Mustangs. Biddlecome, Kennedy Wineland, Harrell, and Ellie Gengler added base hits.

Mackenna Sidzyik recorded an RBI-single and Wineland hit a three-run double to make it 4-1, Mustangs, in game two, but the Tigers scored seven in the sixth inning to steal the win in game two. Biddlecome struck out four, allowing one run in the first five innings, but was unable to finish the sixth. Jordan Skradski recorded the final out of the inning with a strikeout.

Morningside makes another trip south Wednesday, facing College of Saint Mary Wednesday at 3 p.m.
