Mustangs fall in final outing before GPAC play begins

ATCHISON, KAN. – The Mustangs got in a final pair of games ahead of next weekend's Great Plains Athletic Conference opener, stopping at Benedictine for a doubleheader on the way back from the Columbia College Invitational. The Ravens, receiving votes in the latest national poll and playing on their home diamond, swept Morningside on the day with scores of 5-1 and 5-3.

Emma Barwick provided Morningside's lone run in the opener as she drove a shot over the outfield fence with a two-out pitch in the top of the seventh inning. Barwick was two-for-three on in the contest and had a stolen base.

The Mustangs were first on the board in the second half of the doubleheader, pushing three runs across the plate in the third inning. Kennedee Jones was credited with the lone RBI in the contest, scoring Mackenna Sidzyik, who had reached on a two-out error.

Mackenzi Harrel walked behind Sidzyik, and, following Jones' single, would score on a passed ball. Jones took second on the same passed ball and scored on a Paige Schuster single before the final out of the inning was recorded.

The Mustangs open their GPAC season on Saturday, March 23, with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Doane.
