Mustangs split Friday doubleheader in Sioux Center

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – While it's nearly warm enough for softball outdoors in Sioux City, the Mustangs split a pair of indoor games against Waldorf and Dakota State Friday at the American State Bank Dome in Sioux Center Friday afternoon.

The Mustangs came from behind to take down Waldorf 8-6, then fell to Dakota State 6-1 in game two.

In the opening game of the day, both teams struck for runs in the first and second innings. After Waldorf scored to open the game, Lainie Keller doubled to score a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 1-1. Waldorf added three more in the second to take a 4-1 lead into the bottom half of the inning. Paige Schuster added an RBI-double and scored when Emma Barwick reached on a throwing error.

After neither team scored in the third, Morningside flipped the script in the fourth inning. Similarly to the second inning, a Waldorf error allowed Barwick to reach safely and Schuster to score. Keller doubled home Schuster to score Barwick and Mackenna Sidzyik. Morningside led 7-4 after four innings.

Keller added an insurance run in the sixth. Waldorf tried to climb back in the seventh, adding two more runs, but the Mustangs closed the door for a win.

Keller tallied two hits and four RBI in the win. Schuster added two hits and scored twice. Barwick and Sidzyik scored a pair of runs each. Morgan Secora pitched the complete game victory, striking out three batters.

Dakota State struck for five in the bottom of the first inning and the Mustangs were unable to recover. The Trojans added a run in the fourth and Morningside broke through with a run off the bat of Keller in the seventh. Keller doubled home Barwick for the lone run for the Mustangs.

Barwick, Keller, Schuster, Kennedee Jones, and Jalyn Noelle recorded hits for the Mustangs. Barwick, Keller, and Noelle doubled. Maggie Fisher started the game in the circle for Morningside, striking out four after four innings. Bralen Biddlecome pitched two clean innings of relief.
