Mustangs go 1-1 in Sioux Center

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The Morningside softball team got back in action Friday afternoon, as they took on Waldorf and Avila at the American State Bank Sports Complex in Sioux Center.

The Mustangs defeated Waldorf 7-1 in the first game of the day. Waldorf scored the first run of the game on a fielder's choice in the third. The Mustangs responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Mykel Ann Gray hit a sacrifice fly to score Mackenna Sidzyik to tie the game. Ellie Cropley followed that up with an RBI-single and Morgan Nixon added a two-run double. Morningside held a 4-1 lead after three innings.

Nixon helped extend the lead with an RBI-single in the fifth. Ellie Gengler added an RBI-single as a pinch-hitter in the fifth. Vanessa Bohuslavsky scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to be the final run of the game.

Nixon finished the game with two hits and three RBI. Cropley and Bohuslavsky added two hits each. 

Grace Buffington pitched the first four innings, striking out six in the win. Morgan Secora pitched the final three innings of the win. 

Morningside fell to Avila in game two, 6-4. A four-run fifth inning put Avila ahead for good. A Sydney Petersen single brought in Ellie Cropley to score the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. 

Avila answered with a run of their own to make it a 1-1 game after one inning. Cropley doubled home Sidzyik to get the scoring started in the top of the third. Petersen reached on a fielder's choice, and Cropley scored on an error. Nixon added an RBI-single to make it a 4-1 game.

Avila scored once in the fourth to make it a 4-2 game, and put up four in the fifth to take the lead and win. 

Cropley had two hits in the loss, both doubles. Buffington took the loss for the Mustangs, but struck out three over four and two-thirds innings. Bralen Biddlecome recorded the final four out in the circle.

Morningside returns to the field in the American State Bank Sports Complex Saturday. The Mustangs face Bellevue at 10 a.m. and take on Dakota State at 2 p.m.
