Mside winds up spring break contests

MCPHERSON, KS. – Morningside University's offense helped spearhead a 2-1 record at the McPherson Invitational Saturday and Sunday, March 12 and 13.

The Mustangs, moving their record to 9-5, plated eight runs against York College of Nebraska and 11 runs versus Bethel College of Kansas. Senior infielder Lexie Stolen (Sioux City, Iowa) doubled twice and scored three times in the 8-1 win over York and came back in the finale with a home run and three RBI during an 11-2, five-inning triumph against Bethel. Sophomore infielder Kennedee Jones (Ankeny, Iowa) homered and drove in two, and senior designated player Bre Tjebben (Fort Dodge, Iowa) drove in three to aid in the clash with the Threshers.

Senior pitcher Katherine Wurtz (Omaha, Neb.) benefitted from the offense's charges. She gained both decisions, fanning against York and six versus Bethel. Freshman Grace Buffington (Gretna, Neb.) was close to allowing a clean weekend sweep for head coach Jessica Jones-Sitzmann's squad. She battled in a top 25 showdown with Columbia College of Missouri, dodging ten hits and striking out one in a 1-0 defeat.

Morningside returns to the Sunflower State Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20. They face Bethany College Saturday at noon and Kansas Wesleyan University Sunday at noon.
