Morningside collects resounding 6-1 win over Northwestern
SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Iowa's wildly fluctuating weather patterns didn't keep the Mustangs from getting today's Great Plains Athletic Conference men's tennis match with Northwestern in as scheduled, as Morningside came away with a 6-1 victory over the Red Raiders.
A doubles sweep got the Mustangs moving in the right direction early, as Mark Trenkle and Santiago Minetti won the no. 1 doubles match 6-1. Mathys Arnold and Jesse Gerth followed with a 6-0 victory at no. 3, and Marcos Menendez Hervella and Alexis Diaz completed the sweep 6-0.
Arnold was the first to finish his singles match, scoring a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the no. 5 slot. Gerth followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win, and Diaz clinched the team victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win at no. 3.
Trenkle kept NWC off the board with a 6-0, 6-0 win at no. 1, and Minetti added a 6-2, 6-2 win. Menendez Hervella showed a lot of grit as he won his first set 6-2, then battled back to fall just short in an 11-9 super tiebreaker.
Morningside's men's tennis team is down to just two GPAC matches remaining, with a Saturday match at Doane next on the schedule.
