No. 3 Mustangs survive against Jamestown

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – It took everything the Mustangs could muster up Saturday, but No. 3 Morningside avoids the upset with a 39-29 win over Jamestown at Elwood Olsen Stadium.

A Jamestown touchdown with 13:24 left put the Mustangs behind 29-24, but a pair of Lennx Brown touchdown runs gave the lead back to Morningside. Brown had 140 rushing yards and three scores on the ground for the Mustangs. He also passed for 87 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Morningside led 10-8 after one quarter of play thanks to a Bryson Wilke field goal and a Brown 69-yard touchdown run. Brown's lone touchdown pass came on the first play of the second quarter when he connected with Ryan Cole. A Jamal Jones interception return for a touchdown gave the Mustangs a 24-15 lead at the intermission.

A third quarter touchdown from the Jimmies set up the opportunity to take the lead in the fourth quarter, but Brown's strong running game gave the Mustangs the win.

The Mustangs recorded three interceptions and a fumble recovery in the game. Malik Hampton and Landry Phipps had interceptions with no return while Jones had the pick-six. Hampton also forced a fumble that was recovered by Dylan Gray on a punt.

Cash Parker threw for 101 yards for Morningside. Ryan Cole added 66 rushing yards and 41 receiving yards. Drew Sellon had six catches for 64 yards and Zach Norton had six receptions for 37 yards.

Lonell Boyd Jr. had eight total tackles and Isaac Pingel and Haden Mendel added seven each. Boyd Jr. also had a block on a Jamestown field goal attempt.

Morningside heads up Highway 75 to take on Northwestern next Saturday.
