HASTINGS, Neb. — The Morningside baseball team wasn't afraid to swing the bat on Monday in a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader.
RV Morningside (20-3-1, 7-1 GPAC) swept Hastings in a rescheduled twinbill, winning by scores of 16-4 and 17-2. The 33 runs put the Mustangs over the 200-run mark for the season, and added their batting average to .345.
Game 1: Mustangs 16, Broncos 4
Morningside hit seven extra-base hits in the win. The three who doubled were Ryan Kiolbassa, Jacob O'Dell, and Kade Yasui. Yasui also hit a triple, as well as Nathan Thomas and Michael Delzell.
Hayden Hixon hit a pinch-hit three-run home run during the seventh inning that made the score 16-3.
The Mustangs scored in every inning but the first. They scored four in the third and fourth frames.
Kiolbassa, Delzell, O'Dell, and Yasui each drove in two runs, while Thomas and Jaxon Bunkers had one RBI.
Rhys Fairweather earned the win in relief. He pitched 3 2/3 innings, and allowed two runs on four hits. He struck out two and walked one. Fairweather threw 49 pitches, and 30 were strikes.
Game 2: Mustangs 17, Broncos 2
The big inning in this contest was a nine-run fourth inning for the Mustangs. There were two two-run extra-base hits: Yasui hit a double that scored O'Dell and Sam Wilt, while Delzell hit a two-run homer that later brought Yasui home. O'Dell also had a triple that produced a run.
Crosetti and Corder Noun Harder earned triples in the win, while Wilt and O'Dell also produced doubles.
Delzell and O'Dell both had four RBIs.
Kai Purdy-Burton pitched five scoreless innings to get his third win of the season. He allowed two hits and struck out five. Owen Hess and Jordan Bierdemann pitched the other two innings in relief, allowed two runs on three nights.
Twenty-one Mustangs saw game action in the late-afternoon win.
