Mustangs score 31 runs in sweep over Warriors

PHOENIX — A few hours off earning a tie against a Top 10 team, the Morningside University baseball team swept Nelson University (Ariz.) on Thursday night in two seven-inning games. The Mustangs mounted a comeback to win Game 1, 11-9, then scored 20 unanswered runs in Game 2. 

Game 1: Morningside 11, Nelson 9

The Warriors scored early, but the Mustangs scored all 11 runs from the third inning on.

The Mustangs (10-1-1) scored seven runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a Giacomo Crosetti two-run double. Jacob O'Dell, Corder Noun Harder, Ryan Kiolbassa, Luke Blackmon, and Conner Maston also drove in runs during the fourth inning.

Maston also homered in the sixth inning, his third this week.

Kiolbassa was 4-for-4 with three RBIs, while Crosetti also drove home a trio of runs, thanks to a pair of doubles.

Jaxon Bunkers hit a triple in the win.

Kai Purdy-Burton earned his first win of the season, allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work. Sebastian Zamora was awarded the save, striking out three in 2.2 innings.

Game 2: Morningside 20, Nelson 2

Morningside scored 20 unanswered runs, and scored in five of the seven innings.The Mustangs batted through the lineup in the fourth inning, scoring seven runs, then did it again in the fifth, adding five more.

The Mustangs had 17 hits, and they forced 14 walks. Michael Delzell was 5-for-5 with two RBIs and scored four runs. Bunkers and Blackmon also knocked home three runs, while Kiolbassa, Kaleb Bleil, and Kade Yasui had two RBI each.

Nate Parker hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, while Delzell had a double for just the only two extra-base hits in the nightcap.

Cade Nolan started his third game of the season, and pitched well to get win No. 2. Nolan threw six scoreless innings, and struck out 11 Nelson hitters. He walked three and allowed three hits. The Menifee, Calif., native threw 82 pitches, and executed 52 strikes.

MVAOCOU High School grad Brady Seuntjens pitched in his second game on this spring break trip, allowing one earned run and striking out one.

The Mustangs meet up with the Warriors again on Saturday before coming home.
