Mustangs compete in tough National Championship field
VANCOUVER, WASH. – Tayor and Courtney Sporrer's cross country journeys took them to the pinnacle of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics sport as they competed in the NAIA National Championship at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Championship Course.
Taylor Sporrer was the Mustangs' top finisher, placing no. 202 in the 333 runner field. The senior went out strong, with a 3:41.1 first kilometer, and an average mile time of 6:34.1. She crossed the finish line in 24:29.3.
"Both of our girls put in a tremendous amount of work and had a fantastic season to even get the opportunity to run on this tough, historic course," reflected head coach Frank Wallace. "They both rode the highs and lows throughout the race and battled through barriers."
Crossing the finish line in 24:53.7 was Courtney Sporrer, who placed no. 242. She started the day with a 3:27.3 first kilometer while averaging a 6:40.6 per mile.
The pair was among a field of eight Mustangs named Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes earlier this week, recognizing their commitment to academics while competing in athletics.
