Women's wrestling partakes in first tournament as a program

FOREST CITY, Iowa – The Morningside women's wrestling team has it's first competition under its belt as the Mustangs partook in the Waldorf Open Saturday in Forest City.

The highlight of the day was Melissa De La Torre, who battled her way to the 5th place bout. De La Torre received a first round bye in the championship bracket, and lost in a fall in the quarterfinals. She then received a bye to the third round of the consolation bracket. In the third round, De La Torre earned a fall in 4:31 to make the consolation semifinals and lost via fall to go to the fifth place match. De La Torre placed sixth after falling in a tech fall in the fifth place match.

Madeline Black also had a strong debut for the Mustangs. After losing in the first round, Black picked up two falls in a combined 1:40 to make the fourth round of the consolation bracket. She lost in a technical fall in the fourth round but went 2-2 for the day.

Two more Mustangs picked up their first collegiate wins Saturday. Adilene Delgadillo fell in the opening round, but picked up a 6-2 decision in the consolation round before losing in the second round of the consolation bracket. Brooklin Kuester followed a similar path, dropping her first career match before earning a consolation win.

Alyssa Petersen, Elizabeth Rubio, Josie Biffar, Madelyn Stanek, and Nevaeh Hast also got their first taste of college wrestling Saturday. 

The Mustangs are back in action at the Missouri Valley Open in Marshall, Missouri Friday, Nov. 17.
