Morningside overpowers Lancers in non-conference bout

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Feeding off the energy of a ceremonial first serve for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the Morningside women's volleyball team picked up a four set, 21-25, 25-10, 25-16, 25-12 win over Mount Marty in a non-conference at Allee Gymnasium inside the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center.

The Lancers took set one 25-21 as it was the lone set in which Mount Marty hit above .000. The Lancers scored 10 of the final 16 points in the set to win.

The Mustangs were out-hit in the first set, but hit .281, .452, and .375 in the final three sets to win the match. Mount Marty had 10 errors in the second set while the Mustangs had 12 kills and three errors in 32 attacks.

The third set was much of the same for Morningside, as they tallied 16 kills on 31 attacks. The Mustangs scored the first eight points of the third set to cruise to the set victory. The fourth set wasn't quite as strong on the attack as the third, but Morningside still hit over .350 with 12 kills on 24 attacks.

Claire Wilson led the match with 13 kills on a .333 hitting percentage.  Sydney Marlow added 11 kills and Payten Lode had a double-double of 10 kills and 12 digs. Aleksandra Dalach tallied 41 assists and 10 digs. Payton Shoquist added 18 digs.

The Mustangs hosted Childhood Cancer Awareness Night to help bring attention to Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Lolo Edlund, a 7-year-old from Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, hit a ceremonial first serve prior to the match.

The Mustangs remain home Friday to face Midland.
