Mustangs fall in five sets to The Master's

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – In the second game of Thursday's season opening doubleheader in Riverside, California, Morningside fell to The Master's 25-17, 12-25, 25-23, 21-25, 12-15.

Both sides traded points early in the opening set, but the Mustangs started to pull away in the middle of the set, and Sydney Marlow recorded two kills in the final three points to seal a first set win. Morningside had a .424 hitting percentage.

The Master's responded with a strong second set to even the match. The Mustangs built a five point advantage in the second set, but a late surge from The Master's made it 24-23 Morningside late in the third set. After a Morningside timeout, Claire WIlson recorded the kill to seal the set win.

Morningside led 21-19 in set four, but The Master's rattled off six straight points to steal the fourth set. The Master's also had a six-point rally in the fifth set to take a 12-9 lead and held the lead to take the final set.

Marlow tallied a match-high 16 kills and added 12 digs. Payten Lode added 12 kills and 13 digs for the Mustangs. Payton Shoquist added a match-high 30 digs and Gillian DePauw recorded 35 assists.

Morningside is back in action Friday with a pair of matches against Saint Katherine and La Sierra.
