Mustangs unable to notch wins column against Park

PARKVILLE, MO. – Morningside traveled to Park University today, to compete in the opening day of the Park University Classic. The Mustangs, matched with the host Pirates who are ranked no. 6 nationally, fought through three tough sets, losing to Park 25-16, 25-17, and 25-20.

Claire Wilson was a bright spot for Morningside's offense, hitting .444 across the three sets, good four four kills in nine attempts. Sydney Marlow continued to lead the kill count for the season, striking for 15 of the team's 36 kills. Nienke van Drunen recorded six kills, while Gillian DePauw recorded 3 kills and 30 aces.

"We saw a lot of gritty moments from our team and great synergy when things are going our way," reflected head coach Jessica Squier. "I was really proud that each set our girls got better and better. We could have laid down after set one, but we didn't and instead this team's tenacity showed."

Morningside's defensive front recorded three blocks, with Payten Lode recording the team's lone solo block and Kylah Brewer able to take partial credit for the remaining two via block assist. Payton Shoquist took the top spot in digs, recording 10 of the Mustangs 40 in the match. DePauw and Marlow each recorded seven, while Bridget and Emerson Smith each scooped six.

Morningside is back in action tomorrow, with matches against Saint Mary and St. Ambrose.
