Bio

Garret Ehlers joined the Morningside coaching staff ahead of the 2022-23 academic year. In his first year with the Mustangs, he had qualifiers for all three National Championships.

Ehlers was the head girls' coach at Lawton-Bronson Community School District from 2016-2022, also serving as the primary distance coach for both the boys' and girls' teams. During his tenure, multiple school records were broken by the women's team, including the 800-, 1500-, and 3000-meter distances, while the 4x800-meter relay was a consistent state qualifier.

His most proud accomplishment, however, was developing average runners into competitive ones, developing their confidence in their running abilities. In the ten years before Ehlers took over, eight girls had broken 3:00 in the open 800 and in his final year with the Eagles they had seven girls under 2:44.

Ehlers was a standout member of the Mustangs' distance squad from 2010-2014, competing in anything from the 800- to the 10,000-meter. He was the first distance runner to score over 100 individual points in the conference meets including four individual championships and four runner-up performances. He was also a five-time NAIA All-American and two-time National Runner-Up. He held Morningside records in the indoor 4x800-meter relay, 3000-meter run, 3000-meter steeplechase, 8000-meter run, and 10,000-meter run.
