Singles wins power Mustangs to victory over Luther
DECORAH, IOWA – Morningside showed its grit in women's tennis action today, coming back from a disadvantage after doubles play to pick up a 4-3 victory over a strong Luther team.
Line Jensen and Stefany Simplicio picked up a win at no. 1 doubles, 6-3, but fell short of taking the doubles point from the Norse.
Once play moved to singles, the Mustangs were able to take control of the match, with Kailee Bailey picking up a 6-4, 6-3 victory to even the team score. Line Jensen put the Mustangs on top with a 6-4, 6-2 victory, and Stefany Simplicio gave Morningside some breathing room with a 6-0, 6-3 win.
The Norse weren't done yet, though, as they took the no. 5 and no. 4 matches to tie the team score.
Then all eyes turned to the no. 2 match, where Brooke Marshall had come back from losing the first set 6-4 to even the score with a 6-3 victory in set two to force a super tiebreaker. Marshall took the win and gave the Mustangs the team victory with a 10-8 win of the tiebreaker.
Morningside is back on the court on Sept. 20, when the team will travel to Salina, Kan. for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships.
