Women's Tennis starts season with 2-0 opening day

WAVERLY, IOWA – Morningside's women's tennis team made its debut for the fall with a 2-0 opening day in Waverly, Iowa, defeating Coe College 5-2 before shutting out Wartburg College 7-0.

The Mustangs quickly took the doubles point over Coe, as duos of Line Jensen and Stefany Simplicio and Sophia Guntren and Kailee Bailey each claimed 6-2 victories. Brooke Marshall and Lidia Suarez completed the doubles sweep 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreaker. Matches hosted by National Collegiate Athletic Association institutions were previously scored such that each doubles match contributed to the team score, but now are scored with doubles matches composing a best-of series for one point. 

Marshall added to Morningside's lead with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Bailey added a 6-2, 6-1 win, and Jensen sealed the match with a 6-2, 1-6, 10-6 win. Guntren also picked up a singles win with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 victory.

Against the host Knights, Jensen and Simplicio got a 6-2 win and Marshall and Bailey picked up a 6-3 victory in doubles play.

Jensen, Bailey, and Simplicio clinched the Mustang victory with wins of 6-1, 6-1; 6-0, 6-4; and 6-3, 6-0 in singles play. Guntren added a 6-3, 6-4 victory, Marshall a 6-2, 7-6 victory with a 7-4 tiebreaker, and Emma Dahlhoff battled back 6-4, 10-4 to complete the shutout after suffering a 3-6 loss in her opening set. 

Morningside is back on the court tomorrow, completing the weekend road series at Luther in Decorah, Iowa.
