Mustangs shut out Missouri Baptist, Principia to close out road trip

ELSAH, ILL. – A strong finish awaited the Morningside women's tennis team on the final leg of its spring break trip as the Mustangs defeated Missouri Baptist 7-0 before sweeping Principia 9-0, both on their home courts.

The day opened in St. Louis where wins by Jil Hellerforth and Annika Meisel and Emily Clotfelter and Macy McDonald secured the doubles point over the Spartans. Hellerforth and Meisel won 6-3, while Clotfelter and McDonald needed a 7-2 tiebreaker to win the match 7-6.

Morningside swept doubles play at Missouri Baptist, as Lidia Suarez was first on the board with a 6-0, 6-0 win at no. 5 singles. Clotfelter followed with a 7-5, 6-3 win, and Line Jensen sealed the victory with a 6-3, 7-5 win. 

Meisel fell in set 1, 2-6, but came back strong with a 6-4 victory and a 10-8 tiebreaker. McDonald split sets 6-1 and 1-6, winning with a 6-3 tiebreaker. Hellerforth fell 4-6 to open the no. 2 match, coming back with 6-4 and 10-6 wins.

In nearby Elsah, Ill. the Mustangs walked away with the sweep, starting with Clotfelter and McDonald picking up an 8-3 win at no. 3 doubles. Jensen and Stuzynska followed with an 8-4 win, and Hellerforth and Meisel picked up an 8-7 win with a 7-4 tiebreaker.

Meisel won 6-3, 6-2 at no. 3 singles to push the needle closer to a Morningside win, and Clotfelter sealed the victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win in the no. 4 spot.

Jensen would go on to win 2-6, 6-3, with a 10-3 super tiebreaker. Hellerforth followed 4-6, 6-2 with a 12-10 super tiebreaker, and McDonald and Suarez would complete the sweep with 6-2, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-2 victories, respectively.

The Mustang women are back in action in two weeks, playing Mount Marty in a non-conference match, scheduled to be played at South Sioux City's First Serve Tennis Center on March 20 at 4 p.m.
