HASTINGS, NEB. – Morningside's Great Plains Athletic Conference women's soccer opener was far from the easiest matchup of the day, as the Mustangs got the league's lone ranked opponent in no. 25 Hastings College. A flurry of second half scoring left Morningside on the short end of a 3-2 decision when the final whistle blew.
It was Mia Stoffel that got the equalizer to answer Hastings' first goal early in the second half, netting a ball on a pass from Julie Raffel to even things at 1-1.
The Broncos quickly pulled ahead again, but the Mustangs answered almost immediately, as Tuva Hammarlund got a pass from Keyera Harmon less than a minute later to make it two-all.
Hastings grabbed the game winner in the 88th minute, with Morningside unable to capitalize on a corner kick in the 89th minute to all but lock up a draw.
Kyla Syverson took the loss in goal for Morningside, saving 10 shots in the contest.
The Mustangs are back in action on Saturday, hosting Doane University at Elwood Olsen Stadium at 5:30 p.m.
