Morningside ties Hastings 1-1

Mustangs play Broncos to 1-1 tie

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – The Mustangs set out to defend their home turf as they welcomed Hastings College to Elwood Olsen Stadium for women's soccer action. While they didn't come away with a win, playing a very good Hastings team to a 1-1 draw was a victory in itself.

Hastings took the advantage late in the first half of play, scoring the game's first goal with six minutes until halftime. The Mustangs didn't sit back and feel sorry for themselves, though, as they rallied and scored within the next minute. Merel Kooij sent a cross through the box to Julie Raffel, who tucked it into the back of the net for the equalizer.

Raffel's goal headlined Morningside's offense, but it wasn't the Mustangs' only swing at the juggernaut, as Lily Sidel fired two shots on goal and Keyera Harmon and Sina Feeser joined Raffel with one shot on goal each.

The defense for Morningside extended beyond the goal, with the likes of Feeser, Maddie Moore, and Freja Brix Rasmussen interrupting offensive attempts for the Broncos. Megan Messersmith's play in goal, however, is what is reflected on the scoresheet, as she recorded 10 saves in the contest.

The Mustangs are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 1, traveling to Crete, Neb. to play Doane University.
