Women's soccer defeats Northwestern 5-3

Mustangs pick up first conference win

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Morningside's women's soccer team picked up its first Great Plains Athletic Conference win of the season in resounding fashion, putting up five goals  on the way to a 5-3 victory over Northwestern.

Morningside's evening got off to a good start as the Mustangs were awarded a penalty kick early in the match. Jil Hellerforth took the PK, but the ball went wide right to hit the post. Seeing the opportunity, she collected the rebound in front of the goal and went to her left and tucked it in behind the Northwestern keeper who had dived to the right to intercept the PK.

The night went up from there as the Mustangs ran for three more goals, exploiting a weakness on the Raiders' formation's left side, courtesy of Keyera Harmon, Sina Feeser, and Maddie Moore.

In the second half, Morningside put another goal in as a corner kick found Ellie Gengler in front of the goal, giving the Mustangs some insurance in the contest.

Harmon was Morningside's leader on offense, recording six shots including her goal. Lisann Evert also had a pair of assists in the match.

Megan Messersmith kept a clean goal through the first 45 minutes of play, before turning the gloves over to Isabel Ter Weeme. Freja Brix Rasmussen was also crucial for the Mustangs' defense, diffusing several Northwestern attacks before they could make their way to the score sheet.

Morningside is back in action on Saturday, breaking from conference play as it welcomes Viterbo to Elwood Olsen Stadium at 1 p.m.
