Mustangs take top spot at Hastings Bronco Open

HASTINGS, NEB. – Fresh off of a runner-up finish in bracket play at the Jayhawk Collegiate Challenge, the Mustangs upped the ante at this week's Bronco Open, taking the top spot in bracket play for the third year in a row, with freshman Emaly Kruse taking the top spot individually.

Morningside totaled 8,134 pins over the course of its individual and Baker games, with 5,308 pins coming from the individual games.

Kruse' efforts on the day yielded 1,195 pins in individual play before heading to Baker games. Carissa Johnson finished no. 6 with 1,127 pins, Rachel Spier was no. 22 with 1,015, Alexa Munhofen placed 28th with 975 pins, and Morgan Roark placed 58th with 642 pins, rounding out the Mustangs' fivesome.

Morningside faced Iowa Western in the semifinals of match play, defeating the Reivers 215-159 and 208-166, before running into Ottawa in the championship. The Mustangs lost the first game of the championship 176-181 before setting the Braves aside 229-203 and 172-168. 

Samantha Sonier, bowling as part of Morningside's JV squad, placed no. 14 individually, with 1067 pins. 

The Mustangs hope to continue their recent success this weekend, competing in the Leatherneck Classic in Davenport, Iowa.
