Mustangs unable to upset No. 1 Dordt on the road

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa — The Morningside University women's basketball team led by as many as eight points Wednesday against the NAIA's top-ranked team, but Dordt was too much during the fourth quarter.

Dordt outscored the Mustangs 21-13 over the fourth quarter en route to a 67-55 victory.

Morningside (12-15, 10-11 GPAC) shot 44 percent throughout the third quarter, making seven of 16 shots. It went on an 8-0 run toward the end of the quarter to build that eight-point lead. In that span, the Mustangs hit four straight buckets in the paint, including three from Lily Vollertsen.

Vollertsen recorded her second-straight double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

Alexis Spier scored a team-high 16 points, all in the first half. She hit six shots, including three 3-pointers.

Sam Ehlers scored 10 points in 24 points off the bench, and she also had nine rebounds.

Morningside closes its regular season campaign with a 2 p.m. Saturday home game against Briar Cliff.
