Mustangs open 2025 with decisive road win

OMAHA, Neb. – A strong 27-point second quarter on Thursday powered the Morningside women's basketball team to a 94-51 win over College of Saint Mary, kicking off 2025 in style.

The Mustangs, receiving votes in the latest NAIA women's basketball team, went on a 16-0 that helped them create the distance needed to earn their eighth win overall and sixth in Great Plains Athletic Conference play.

Jaeden Webb and Alexis Spier each scored five points throughout the 16-0 run that started in the final seconds of the first quarter, lasting into the majority of the second.

Twelve ladies scored in the victory, led by Lily Vollertsen with 17 points. Webb and Spier had 14 points, and Clancy Brown contributed a career-high 13 off the bench.

Morningside shot 43 percent in the decisive win, and made 10 3-pointers. It was also 14-for-15 from the free-throw line.

Spier also led the rebounding charge with nine. Overall, Morningside outrebounded the Flames 50-27.

Morningside had 22 steals, there were three – Spier, Baylie Girres, and Tonja Heirings – all had four steals.
