SIOUX CITY, IOWA – A hot-shooting outing from Briar Cliff turned out to be enough to derail a Morningside women's basketball bid to upset the no. 17 team in the country, as the Mustangs fell 84-75 against the host Chargers.
Matching 22-14 efforts from the Mustangs in the second and third quarters put the Mustangs back on top as the clock switched to the final 10 minutes of play, erasing a 26-11 deficit from the first quarter. It was a pair of technical foul free throws for Ella Wragge that pulled the Mustangs even and put them ahead with one second remaining in the third period, coming on the heels of a highly-contested layup by Dani Peterson.
Lily Vollertsen led Morningside's scoring on the day, as the junior center hit for 17 points. Alexis Spier followed with 15, Wragge had 13, and Chaise Pfanstiel had 12. Peterson led in bench points with six.
Spier led Morningside on the boards with seven rebounds, all on defense. Sam Ehlers followed with six and Wragge had five. Megan Callahan, Pfanstiel, Spier, and Wragge each had a pair of steals, while Jordyn Carr and Pfanstiel each notched a trio of assists.
Morningside returns to Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center's Allee Gymnasium on Saturday, tipping off against Doane at 2 p.m.
