Bench shines in loss at Northwestern

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – In a battle of 12-8 teams in conference play to open the final week of the regular season, Morningside fell short at Northwestern 95-64 in Orange City Wednesday night.

Northwestern jumped out to an early double digit lead, but a late flurry from the Mustangs made it 24-20 Northwestern after one quarter. The Red Raiders created separation in the second quarter, taking a 47-31 lead into the half. 

The Red Raiders shot 47% from the field and 58% from beyond the arc to run away with the win. Northwestern also controlled the glass by out-rebounding Morningside 52-36. 

Morningside relied heavily on the bench Wednesday night as 58 of the teams 64 points came from the bench. Lily Vollertsen tallied 28 points and eight rebounds to lead the charge. Lauren Hedlund added nine points and Chaise Pfanstiel eight points. 

The Mustangs are back in action at Briar Cliff Saturday afternoon for the regular season finale. Morningside is tied with Jamestown for sixth in the conference heading into the final day of the season.
