Morningside holds on to 76-68 win at Midland

FREMONT, NEB. – Another Great Plains Athletic Conference win was on the line as Morningside visited Midland this afternoon. The Mustangs emerged victorious after 40 minutes of play, picking up a 76-68 win to advance to 10-7 overall and 7-5 in the GPAC.

While Morningside led the entire game, it wasn't a clear win by any means as Midland three-pointers kept them in the running throughout the game, hitting one as the clock ticked past the two minute mark in the final quarter to pull within four. The Mustangs, however, went 6-of-8 at the free-throw line in the same period to secure the win.

Morningside shot 42.9 percent from the floor in the contest, including 21.1 percent from beyond the three-point arc. Midland, on the other hand, was 43.4 percent overall and went 14-of-28 from beyond the arc. Morningside scored 24 points in 34 attempts at the foul line, while Midland went 8-of-9.

The Mustangs had just 11 turnovers compared to Midland's 23, recording 31 points off of turnovers while giving up just 11.

Alexis Spier was the game's leading scorer, with 26 points. Chloe Lofstrom followed for Morningside with 16, and Chaise Pfanstiel had 11 off of the bench.

Lofstrom led the way on the boards, with a game-high nine rebounds, followed by Spier with five and Lauren Hedlund with four.

Jaeden Webb proved a nuisance to Midland's offense, as her quick hand knocked the ball away for five steals, followed by Olivia Larsen with three.

The Mustangs, now in their second pass through the conference, host Jamestown on Wednesday, January 24, at 6 p.m. in Allee Gym.
