Offensive explosion leads Morningside to 94-66 win over College of Saint Mary

OMAHA, Neb. – The lead was 19 points after one quarter, and the Mustangs continued to cruise from there in a 94-66 win over College of Saint Mary Saturday in Omaha. 

The Mustangs (5-4 overall, 2-3 in GPAC) shot near 42% in the first quarter and 57% in the second quarter to give Morningside a sizable 57-30 lead at halftime. The Flames outscored Morningside in the third quarter, but Morningside kept their foot on the pedal in the fourth to keep College of Saint Mary out of reach.

Alexis Spier is the lone Mustang who played more than half the game Saturday, totaling 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting in 23 minutes. Chloe Lofstrom battled in the post, converting on 8-of-9 shots to score 18 points and added eight rebounds in just 20 minutes of play. 

Making her first varsity start with the Mustangs, freshman Jaeden Webb totaled nine points and four rebounds. Jordyn Carr scored eight points. Morningside put up 87 shots in the game, which is the fifth most shots attempted in a game in program history. 

The Mustangs locked down on the glass as well, totaling 52 rebounds, 31 of which were offensive. College of Saint Mary had fewer total rebounds than Morningside did offensive, grabbing 23 rebounds, all defensive. 

College of Saint Mary shot 51% from the field in the game, but committed 25 turnovers to just eight by the Mustangs. Morningside outscored the Flames 29-6 off turnovers and 33-0 on second chance opportunities.

Morningside remains on the road Wednesday night, taking on Jamestown in Jamestown, North Dakota.
