Morningside defeats Midland 75-50

Women's basketball wins regular season fin-Allee, 75-50

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Morningside's women's basketball team exited Allee Gym, at least for the regular season, on a resounding note, clearing its bench in a 75-50 victory over Midland University. The Mustangs never trailed in the contest, holding the Warriors to just six points in the second quarter to set up the win.

It took Morningside a portion of the first quarter to come up with a gameplan to get around Midland's 6-1 center, Erin Prusa, but once the Mustangs found a way around the senior, they outscored Midland 34-6 in the paint, with 14 second chance points. Morningside also had the edge on rebounds, with 42 to the Warriors' 39.

The Mustangs spread out the scoring again today, as has been a trademark of the selfless Morningside squad. Alexis Spier finished the game with 12 points, followed by Olivia Larsen, with 11, and Sophia Peppers with nine points. Chloe Lofstrom, Chaise Pfanstiel, Lily Vollertsen, and Sadie Roth all had six points, tailed by McKenna Sims, and Aspen Jansa with five. Lauren Hedlund followed with four, Abbe Morten and Jordyn Carr had two, and Jillian Shanks had one point.

Ten Mustangs had assists in the contest, led by Larsen with five, Sims, Peppers, and Roth with three, and Pfanstiel with two assists. Jansa, Hedlund, Lofstrom, Spier, and Carr each had a single assist.

Peppers led the way in the ball control category, with 11 rebounds. Lofstrom grabbed five boards, while Sims, Spier, and Jansa each followed with four. Roth and Hedlund both collected three caroms. Spier tallied four steals to lead the team, followed by Peppers, Larsen, and Pfanstiel, with three each.

While it's possible that the Mustangs played their last game in Allee Gym for the season, they're not finished yet, as they plunge into postseason play on Wednesday evening, visiting Briar Cliff University for the Great Plains Athletic Conference postseason tournament quarterfinal round at 7 p.m.
