Mustangs suffer setback at Concordia

SEWARD, NEB. – Morningside was unable to complete the comeback in today's women's basketball contest at Concordia University. The Bulldogs held off the Mustangs' attempt at a second half comeback, defeating the visitors from Sioux City 74-60.

Morningside fell behind early, as Concordia opened the game with an 11-0 run, outscoring the Mustangs 37-21 in the first half. The Sioux City squad turned the tables in the second half, outscoring their hosts 26-17 in the third quarter, but were unable to keep the Bulldogs against the ropes as the buzzer sounded at the conclusion of 40 minutes of play.

Sophia Peppers led all scorers, with 15 points in the Great Plains Athletic Conference loss. Alexis Spier followed, ahead of all Concordia scorers, with 14, and Lily Vollertsen had 11 points. Peppers had a team-leading four assists, with Chaise Pfanstiel dishing three, and Spier and Olivia Larsen each claiming two assists.

The reigning GPAC player of the week also led Morningside in rebounds, completing her second double-double in three games with 10 boards tonight. Vollertsen was a rebound away from double-digits, with nine. Larsen and Ella Wragge followed with a distant four boards each.

The Mustangs will hope to regain some momentum in their push for the postseason on Saturday, when they travel to Mount Marty University in Yankton, S.D. for a 2 p.m. contest.
