Morningside falls to Jamestown 82-70

Mustangs unable to extend win streak into 2023

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The Jimmies hoped 2023 might be the year that saw Jamestown break a seven game losing streak to Morningside. The Mustangs, on the other hand, were looking to stay hot, riding a four-game win streak into the twice-rescheduled matchup at the Great Plains Athletic Conference's northernmost site. Morningside led early, but was unable to hold off a sharpshooting Jamestown team, falling 82-70 in the contest.

Jamestown's attack relied heavily on the three-point shot, where the Jimmies went 9-for-26, shooting 50 percent overall. The hosts also made 21-of-24 attempted free throws.

Morningside, on the other hand, shot 43 percent from the floor and went 14-for-17 at the charity stripe. The Mustangs had 35 rebounds and 40 points in the paint, outworking the Jimmies below the basket.

Lilly Vollertsen led Morningside against the Jimmies' defense, netting 17 points as she went 6-for-10 from the floor and made 5-of-6 free throws. Sophia Peppers followed with 11 second-half points, and Chloe Lofstrom netted nine.

Alexis Spier and McKenna Sims each grabbed five rebounds in the contest to lead the Mustangs. Peppers, Lofstrom, and Vollertsen followed with four apiece.

Morningside, now 8-6 and 3-5 in the league, will be back on the floor in Allee Gym on Wednesday, Jan. 4, playing College of Saint Mary at 6 p.m.
