Mustangs triumph over Viterbo 68-55

Late free throws lift Mustangs in Hawaii opener

HILO, HAWAII – Late free throws were key for Morningside as the Mustangs triumphed over the Viterbo V-Hawks in women's basketball action, 68-55. The V-Hawks, clad in their dark jerseys, were within a score of tying the game in the closing minutes, but repeat trips to the free throw line allowed the Mustangs to remain on top at the final horn.

Sophia Peppers led all players in scoring and in rebounds, recording a double-double in the contest with 31 points and 11 rebounds. Key among Peppers' points was an 8-for-8 stretch at the charity stripe in the final two minutes of play.

Peppers was followed, in scoring and rebounds, by Chloe Lofstrom, who had 14 points to fall second among all scorers. Lofstrom and Aspen Jansa each had seven rebounds in the contest. Olivia Larsen had six rebounds and Alexis Spier had five to round out the starters. Lauren Hedlund, leading the reserve players, also had five boards.

The Mustangs turn around and play Valley City State tomorrow at 1 p.m. central time, competing again in Hilo's Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
