Mside closes pre-Christmas home schedule on high note

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Morningside University paved its way to a seventh straight win with a stifling defense Saturday, Dec. 4.

Head coach Jamie Sale's Mustangs turned up their patented full-court pressure to the tune of 33 turnovers committed by visiting Mount Marty University. The home team offense benefitted with 45 of its 80 points occurring due to that total.

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' No. 10-ranked team scored the game's first seven points and continued to increase their advantage at every turn. They hit halftime with a 46-13 lead and didn't look back.

Sale's squad, improving to 7-2 overall and 5-0 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference, used an impressive late afternoon/early evening performance from the bench to guide an 80-42 win. Sophomore guard Alexis Spier (Gretna, Neb.) tossed in a game-high 14 points, and senior guard Madison Clayton (Sioux City, Iowa) chipped in 10 points, six rebounds, three steals, and two steals. Senior forward Sophia Peppers (Exira, Iowa) wound up with 11 points, six steals, five assists, four rebounds), and senior guard Sierra Mitchell (Pleasant Hill, Iowa) inched closer to the program's second spot on the all-time scoring list, posting 10 to the scoreboard.

Morningside begins eight in a row on the road Wednesday, Dec. 8. Game time against crosstown league rival Briar Cliff University is 6 p.m. at BCU's Newman Flanagan Center.
