Spectacular Saturday - Individual record, 13th straight "W" spotlight road trip

YANKTON, S.D. – Saturday, Jan 30, is a day the 2020-21 Morningside College women's basketball squad isn't likely to forget any time too soon.

Behind a school-record-tying 45-point outing from senior guard Sierra Mitchell (SR/Pleasant Hill, Iowa) (Pleasant Hill, Iowa), which included her becoming the all-time leader in career treys (388), head coach Jamie Sale's team locked up at least a tie for the Great Plains Athletic Conference regular-season championship and the top seed in the postseason tournament, rolling past Mount Marty University 86-65. Mitchell's excellent weekend appearance at MMU's Laddie Cimpl Arena didn't stop there, either.

She also moved into fifth on the all-time scoring list (1,827 points). Beyond that, the senior standout tied the most three-pointers attempted (20), tied for the second-most three-pointers made (nine), tried the third-most field goals (28), and tied for the third-most field goals converted (15). A dizzying stat line that also featured five steals, four rebounds, and three assists.

Mitchell wasn't the only Mustangs' player making noise. Junior forward Sophia Peppers (JR/Exira, Iowa) (Exira, Iowa) contributed a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds. Simultaneously, freshman post player Chloe Lofstrom (FR/Armstrong, Iowa) (Armstrong, Iowa) turned in a perfect field goal afternoon, going five-for-five for 10 points.

Mside, extending its win streak to 13 in a row to go to 19-2 overall and 17-1 in the GPAC, opened the game on a 23-8 run and didn't look back. The Maroon built their advantage to as large as 34.

Morningside continues a two-game road swing Wednesday, Feb 3. They travel to the World's Only and Famous Corn Palace for a 6 p.m. contest against Dakota Wesleyan University.
