Late rally subdues Mustangs, Mitchell reaches milestone

ATCHISON, KS. – Morningside College put three players in double-figure scoring, but it wasn't enough to overcome host Benedictine College Saturday, Nov. 7.

The Mustangs, aiming for a 2-0 weekend tour of the Kansas City area and a similar mark for the start of the 2020-21 season, held a 61-57 lead with just over four minutes to go inside BC's Haverty Center. However, the Ravens turned the tables on their guests, registering nine of the game's final 13 points to edge head coach Jamie Sale's squad 66-64. Mside's offensive attack struggled down the stretch making only one of five shot attempts and turning the ball over three times to fuel the home team comeback.

Senior guard Sierra Mitchell (SR/Pleasant Hill, Iowa) (Pleasant Hill, Iowa) was the co-scoring leader with 14 points, as she became the 12th player in program history to reach 1500 points. Junior guard McKenna Sims (SO/South Sioux City, Neb.) (South Sioux City, Neb.) also wound up with 14 to go along with four rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Junior forward Sophia Peppers (JR/Exira, Iowa) (Exira, Iowa) rounded out the double-digit efforts with 12 to add to a team-best eight rebounds. Freshman center Chloe Lofstrom (FR/Armstrong, Iowa) (Armstrong, Iowa) wrapped up an impressive first weekend in Maroon, as she tallied nine points, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out two assists.

The Mustangs (1-1) begin the Great Plains Athletic Conference campaign Wednesday, Nov. 11. They travel to the University of Jamestown for a 6 p.m. start.
