Mitchell milestone helps Mustangs reach century mark

HONOLULU, HAWAII – The Mustangs showed that they weren't just in Hawaii looking for a vacation, toppling the Golden Eagles from John Brown University, 100-59, in women's basketball action as part of the 2018 Malika Sports Tours Hoop N Surf Classic. Morningside advances to 10-3 on the season, following a game in which Jamie Sale was able to clear his bench.

The Mustangs exchanged blows with the Golden Eagles, trading the lead for the first two minutes of the game. The teams tied at 8 points apiece, and Morningside didn't give up the lead from there, thanks in part to Sierra Mitchell (SO/Pleasant Hill, IA) reaching double digits in the points column in the first five minutes of play.

Mitchell finished the afternoon leading all scorers with a career-high 35 points, connecting on 10 of 18 attempts from beyond the arc and tying a school record set in 2008 by Laura Nelson.

Mitchell wasn't alone in three-point land. Taylor Rodenburgh (FR/Hawarden, IA) went 4 for 6, Tayte Hansen (SO/York, NE) hit two of four, while Jordyn Moser (JR/Harlan, IA), Haleigh Melstad (FR/Vermillion, SD), Mady Maly (SO/Wahoo, NE), Faith Meyer (SO/Pomeroy, IA ), and Ashlyn Ekdahl (SO/Omaha, NE) each contributed one. The Mustangs went 21 for 37 from beyond the three-point line, tying a school record set vs Nebraska Wesleyan in 2013.

In addition to Mitchell's 35, the Mustangs had contributions in the points column from Rodenburgh with 14, Sydney Hupp (JR/O'Neill, NE) with 8, and Kailey Burke (SO/Hinton, IA), Tayte Hansen, and Carissa Powell (SO/South Sioux City, NE), each with six.

Alexandra Gill (SR/Omaha, NE) led Morningside's rebound attempts, with six, followed by Mitchell and Hupp with five each.

The Mustangs return to action in the Hoop N Surf Classic on Dec. 20, taking on Lake Forest College in a 5:00 p.m. contest.
