Morningside women down Dordt

SIOUX CENTER, IOWA – The Mustangs staved off a third quarter comeback attempt from Dordt on their way to a 97-84 victory on Nov. 10 in women's basketball action. No. 11 Morningside is now tied atop the GPAC at 2-0 in the conference and 4-0 overall.

Despite never surrendering the lead beyond the end of the first quarter, the Mustangs didn't get by without any scares. With as little as three minutes left in the third quarter, the Defenders had cut the lead to just two.

"I think Dordt is a very improved team, they're really good. They shot the ball well," complimented head coach Jamie Sale. "We did a good job maintaining our composure when they made a run."

Sierra Mitchell (SO/Pleasant Hill, IA) led the Mustangs and all scorers, going 11 of 19 for 32 points. She was followed by Skyler Snider (JR/Kearney, NE) with 16 and Tayte Hansen (SO/York, NE) came off the bench to contribute 12. Morningside's bench turned in 35 points in the contest, with the team taking 36 points off of turnovers. Morningside shot 46.8% from the field and 66.7% from the free throw line.

Sydney Hupp (JR/O'Neill, NE) pulled down a team-leading six rebounds, followed by Snider and Kailey Burke (SO/Hinton, IA) with five each on the way to the team's total of 41.

"It was nice to see us progress. I think we played better than we did in the first three games," reflected Sale. "In the long run, this is going to be a huge win because this is going to be a tough place for a lot of people to win. It's always hard to win here, and now they're even better than they have been. The team's better and they're really well coached. They play hard on defense."

The Mustangs are back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 14 with a 6:00 p.m. contest at cross-town rival Briar Cliff.
