Mustangs end regular season with defensive win

MITCHELL, S.D. — The Morningside University softball team ended the regular season with a win Saturday over Dakota Wesleyan, 3-1.

Morningside (29-15, 17-5 GPAC) jumped out to a 3-0 start. Paige Schuster had a first-inning solo home run. In the fourth inning, Morgan Secora had an RBI single and Ashlyn Caniglia scored on a wild pitch. Ellie Gengler also had a triple in the win.

Secora also was the winning pitcher in Game 2, holding the Tigers to two hits. She struck out seven and walked one. Secora threw 86 pitches, and threw for 58 strikes. The run the Tigers scored was unearned.

The Tigers opened the GPAC doubleheader by winning Game 1, 4-0. Morningside had four hits, all singles.

Morningside placed third in the GPAC standings, putting them in next week's GPAC Tournament at Midland. The Mustangs will play No. 6 Dordt at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Fremont, Nebraska. The GPAC Tournament is double elimination, with the final series being best two out of three.
