SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Morningside softball hit the field at the Jensen Softball Complex for just the second time this season, and came away with a doubleheader split against the Lancers Friday afternoon.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 3-1 lead in game one, but needed a walk-off winner from Mackenna Sidzyik to take the 5-4 win. In game two, it was a solo home run in the seventh for the Lancers that was the difference in a 3-2 win for Mount Marty.
The Lancers scored one in the first, but RBI doubles from Paige Schuster, Mackenzi Harrel, and Ellie Gengler made it 3-1 after one. Mount Marty tied the game at three with a two-run home run, but Kennedee Jones hit a solo blast of her own to make it 4-3 after four.
Mount Marty tied game one at four in the top of the sixth, but after Bralen Biddlecome was able to get through the top of the seventh unscathed, Emma Barwick singled and came around to score on Sidzyik's double.
Schuster and Harrel had two hits each in the win. Five different Mustangs drove in runs and those same five each had one extra base hit. Bralen Biddlecome picked up her fourth win of the season, striking out three over seven innings.
The Mustangs loaded the bases in the first inning of game one, but didn't score until the sixth. Mount Marty pushed across two in the third to lead 2-0. The Mustangs loaded the bases again in the fourth, but weren't able to score. Starting pitcher Morgan Secora gave herself some help with a two-run home run to tie the game at two in the sixth. The Lancers hit a two-out home run to take the 3-2 lead and the win.
Harrel had two hits in game two. Secora's home run was one of two extra base hits for Morningside, and Lainie Keller's double was the other. Secora struck out four over seven innings in the loss.
Morningside is back in action Saturday for Senior Day against Briar Cliff. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the Senior Day festivities will follow the doubleheader.
