Hicks, Welker top finishers for Morningside at the Mount Marty Invitational

Mustangs continue to improve, compete in Mount Marty Invitational

YANKTON, S.D. – You could find the Mustangs competing on a course nestled into the rolling hills of Yankton, S.D. in one final tune up before the 2022 Great Plains Athletic Conference Championships in the first week of November. The Mustangs placed 10th of 12 teams competing in the contest.

While the overall finish may not have been what Morningside was looking for, there were still positives as the young team continues to improve and grow as a unit.

Leading the pack was RC Hicks, finishing the 8K course in 28:38.71. Mason Welker, a junior and one of the team's veterans, crossed the line at 28:41.09, and Nick Schiltz finished in 28:56.59. The three runners were within less than 20 seconds of each other, feeding off of each other's energy.

Up next for Morningside was Casey Kruger, who finished the course in 29:18.80, and Levi Son, who rounded out the top five for Morningside, crossing in 29:29.00.

The Mustangs are back in action at the GPAC Championships on Nov. 5 at Jamestown, N.D.
