Morningside collects five pins against Warriors in dual victory

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – In its first Great Plains Athletic Conference dual since Nov. 26, the Morningside University men's wrestling team defeated Waldorf 45-9 on Tuesday at the Hindman-Hobbs Center.

It's the second GPAC dual win for the Mustangs, who came into Tuesday night with seven of its competing men ranked in the league.

Here's a breakdown of the matches by weight class.

Note: The first ranked number is from the GPAC, followed by NAIA rankings.

125 pounds: No. 6 Zachary Southern of Waldorf won by forfeit.

133: GPAC No. 3 Christian Ahrens pinned Malachi Aispuro, 0:53

Ahrens earned an early three-point takedown in the first period, then 16 seconds later, the freshman from Creston, Iowa, earned the win by fall.

141: No. 4/21 Hunter Steffans pinned No. 6 Shiwoko Shiwoko, 6:46

Steffans was aggressive on offense early, scoring nine points in the first period. The Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School grad scored seven additional points before pinning Shiwoko with 14 seconds remaining.

149: No. 3/20 Tyler Okada (Waldorf) def. Chris Aragon, 16-13

Aragon had a late three-point takedown in the third period as he tried to fight back against the Warriors' only nationally-ranked grappler.

157: No. 3 Caden Eggleston pinned Dalton Thorson, 2:29

Eggleston took down Thorson just 83 seconds into the match, then 52 seconds later, the sophomore from Hickman, Neb., earned the six-point win by fall for the Mustangs.

165: No. 1/6 Zander Ernst def. Daven Hames, TF 20-3 2:54

Ernst scored all 20 of his points in the first period off of two nearfalls and four takedowns. It's his seventh win by way of technical fall.

174: No. 6 Carson Turnis pinned Ellis Hughes, 6:18

Turnis was on his way to a technical fall, as the West Delaware High School grad had four takedowns during the match. Then, he earned the pin with 42 seconds left.

184: No. 6 Kaden Street maj. dec. Skyler Schmidt, 17-5

After being down early, Street ended the first period with four quick points, and then getting a takedown late in the second period. Then, Street picked up a takedown, nearfall, and scored an extra point for riding time.

197: Bryce Kwiecinski won by forfeit.

285: Jakob Jerabek won by forfeit.
