Morningside grapplers find success at Minnesota West Open

WORTHINGTON, Minn. – A handful of Mustang grapplers made the trek north to compete in the Minnesota West Open Saturday.

Three Morningside wrestlers competed at 285. Jakob Jerabek placed third, earning a pair of falls before a semifinal loss to South Dakota State's Kail Wynia, who competed unattached. Jerabek earned a 6-4 overtime win for third place. 

Brenick Hoppe made the second round of the consolation and after a fall in the first round, Forrest Hyson's day also ended in the second round of consolation competition.

Brock Bolling made the 141-pound championship with a 4-0 decision in the first round and a 9-6 decision in the semifinals. Bolling fell to South Dakota State's Caleb Thoennes, who was competing unattached, in the championship match.

At 174, Samuel Moore had a first round bye, but a 4-1 decision got him into the semifinals. Moore placed fourth in the weight class for the Mustangs.

Sendeska Kalskett tallied a 16-2 major decision in the first round at 197 and placed fourth in the weight class.

Alex Van Dyke rebounded from a second round loss to earn a 15-1 major decision in the consolations. Van Dyke placed sixth in the 184-pound weight class.

Abraham Dirkx won his opening round match in a 9-5 decision at 157. 

In the 133-pound bracket, Wyatt Skuodas placed fifth.

The Mustangs return to GPAC action this week, as 14th-ranked Morningside makes a trip to Orange City to face Northwestern Wednesday. The GPAC Duals II in Sioux City is set for Saturday.
