Ottawa ousts Mustangs in Arizona opener

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — After winning the first set on Monday, the Morningside men's volleyball team fell to Ottawa to start a week full of matches.

The Spirit defeated the Mustangs 19-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-20.

In the first set, Morningside (8-6) went on a 5-1 run late in the set. During that run, Taysen Ford and Mohamed Benkrid had kills, while Tharen Cox and Natan Alves recorded service aces.

Ian Smith scored the 24th point of the set with a kill, then Morningside clinched the set with a hitting error from Ottawa.

Alves and Benkrid each had nine kills out of the total 43 earned by the Mustangs. Donte Jennings had six.

Gabe Schreck led the Mustangs with 20 assists, while Jacob DePauw had 16.

Owen Anderson had a team-high nine digs. Smith had two solo blocks, and Cox had one.
