
Mustangs tame Tigers in quick three-set victory
MCPHERSON, KAN. – The Mustangs made quick work of the Central Christian Tigers in Great Plains Athletic Conference men's volleyball action tonight, winning 25-14, 25-12, and 25-8.
Morningside, who sits in sole possession of second place in the league, hit .277 as a team, with 36 kills. Kirby Schmalz led the way with 11 kills, with Branton Jones next in line with eight. Michael Padilla and Erik Krenz each had five terminations, and Sam Benick had four. Jacob Baynes, in the role of setter for the Mustangs, tallied 20 assists alongside his three kills. Donavon Chandy had 11 assists.
Chandy led a serving corps that recorded 14 service aces, with the sophomore's five at the top of the leaderboard. Padilla had four and Schmalz had two.
Benick and Baynes each had a pair of block assists, accounting for both of Morningside's total blocks. Meanwhile, behind the block, it was Schmalz that had eight digs, Chandy had six, Padilla had five, and Baynes and Krenz had four each.
The Mustangs return to the court tomorrow, continuing conference play at Kansas Wesleyan University at 2 p.m.
